We don’t recommend it. For those unfamiliar with ChatGPT, it’s essentially an artificial-intelligence (AI) chatbot. It has garnered much attention as of late for its detailed responses and articulate answers across many domains of knowledge, including the law. Many professionals have relied on the chatbot to help create content for social media, websites, and blog posts. But there are some inherent weaknesses with ChatGPT that make it an unreliable tool to generate law firm posts.

Inaccurate Information

The ChatGPT website specifically warns, “ChatGPT may produce inaccurate information about people, places, or facts.” That’s correct, “inaccurate information.” At the very least, then, you must rigorously review a ChatGPT generated blog post to ensure that all the information is reliable and correct.

Please also keep in mind that the chatbot usually knows when it’s providing wrong information. As a result, it will use sophisticated content to help mask its inaccuracies. If you don’t have a good handle on the topic you want to generate a blog post on, you might miss a mistake when reviewing and you’re then offering unreliable information on your website.

Simplified Information

We’ve experimented with ChatGPT and it typically provides a bare-bones type of blog post. It will write on a topic and cover most basics, but that’s it. It doesn’t discuss related topics or attempt to answer any questions that a reader may have.

A result is that a potential client might find your ChatGPT post careless and unhelpful. A key reason for maintaining a blog, however, is to provide free information to clients that will further their interests. Simplified content might be free, but it will do little to advance a potential client’s needs.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Human Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is by no means human intelligence. AI chatbots may create content, but it’s not content created by a human with a thorough understanding of its intended audience. Don’t get us wrong. We believe ChatGPT is an amazing tool, and it can serve quite useful in providing ideas for blog posts and similar pieces of content. But it lacks a human element that can speak directly to a reader’s emotions, interests, and feelings.
